If there's a coin that you're really not an expert on, it can be a quick reference to let you know that this coin should be in the 50 to 100 dollar range and not 150 to 200 range. That is an over-generalization, as Illini points out, there are cases in which RedBook prices are much lower than what market prices for a given coin are. Also with the RedBook you have to be careful because it only comes out once a year.
