It could quite easily "talk" 20 miles depending on terrain. Handhelds have 1/10 the power and way less efficient antennas so 5-10 miles might be the best you can get radio to radio.

Most rigs are handheld now and can communicate between each other as well as to a base station. there are repeater towers for the band and they will reach 100 miles easily.

2024年11月6日 · Up until about 3 years ago, this county was on UHF and I could listen on my dual band ham radio or handheld. Now with P25 simulcast, you need a high dollar Uniden to listen while mobile. There is so much EMS and LE radio traffic in this county, that I only monitor the fire department dispatch on a regular basis.
