We have a brand new custom built home, and our stove cannot be opened without smoke spilling out even if the door is cracked less than an inch.

So is a five gallon pail of baking soda - best means of quickly putting out a fire in the stove without destroying it or sending hot coals into the living space. I really don't see any way the Defiant is inherently any more likely to be a fire hazard than any other wood stove.
