Aam Aadmi Party candidate Dr Ishank Kumar Chabbewal won the Chabbewal assembly seat in Punjab on Saturday, defeating his nearest rival and Congress nominee Ranjit Kumar by 28,690 votes, according to officials.

The AAP’s candidate Dr Ishank Kumar decisively defeated Congress’s Ranjit Kumar by a margin of 28,690 votes. Dr Ishank secured 51,904 votes, compared to Ranjit’s 23,214 votes, while BJP candidate Sohan Singh Thandal managed only 8,692 votes.

The bypolls were necessitated after the incumbent legislators were elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.

AAP is leading in Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal and Gidderbaha while Congress is leading only on one seat in Barnala. The BJP is at third position in all four seats. Notably, Congress won in Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal and Gidderbaha in the 2022 Punjab elections and AAP won in Barnala.

In Dera Baba Nanak, AAP's Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon was leading by 1,044 votes against his nearest rival and Congress nominee Amrita Warring, the wife of Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.

While Congress could only win Barnala, the AAP won Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal and Gidderbaha seats in the Punjab bypolls.

In all four bypoll seats, the contest was primarily between the AAP and Congress, with the BJP trailing in third place in every seat
