The hornet was discovered in a corner of Washington State. Five years later, a massive mobilization has eliminated the invasive species, at least for now.

The so-called "murder hornet" has been eradicated from the U.S., five years after the invasive species was first discovered in Washington state, officials declared.

Had the hornets become established in the U.S., they could have posed a significant threat to honeybees and other native insects. The WSDA says northern giant hornets can kill an entire honeybee hive in as little as 90 minutes. Their sting is also more dangerous than that of a honeybee.
