Pope Leo XIV, in New Orleans

Pope Leo XIV celebrated his first mass on Friday in the Sistine Chapel with the cardinals who elected him, as Italian media trumpeted the historic significance of Chicago-born missionary Robert Prevost becoming the first North American pontiff.
As white smoke announced the election of a new pope last week, keepers at Rome zoo celebrated the hatching of a baby bird known colloquially as a 'Pope Vulture'.
But news that Prevost, a 1977 Villanova graduate who is now known as Pope Leo XIV, had ascended to the papacy still dominated conversations among students and many of their parents who were on campus May 9.
After a series of closures by the Chicago Archdiocese, Christ Our Savior Church in South Holland has bragging rights as Pope Leo XIV’s childhood parish.
