法夏，即半夏，是中医临床常用的化痰止咳药，但因其具有刺激性毒性，历代医家对其炮制方法极为考究。吕文扬的研究始于一个偶然发现——2023年5月，他在整理北宋《太平惠民和剂局方》时注意到，古籍记载的"姜矾制"法夏与现代药典标准存在微妙差异。在北京市自然科学基金资助下，他联合三家三甲医院启动了"法夏炮制工艺与药效关联性研究"项目。
