According to the plan, the residential clean energy credit, which provides a 30% tax credit for home solar panels, batteries, geothermal heat pumps and more, would expire at the end of 2025. The credit is currently set to expire at the end of 2034. The tax credit for rooftop solar panels has existed, in some form or another, since 2005 .

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday proposed killing the electric vehicle tax credit and repealing fuel efficiency rules designed to prod automakers into building more zero-emission vehicles as part of a broad-based tax reform bill.

Carmakers that have yet to sell 200,000 EVs would be granted until the end of 2026; the rest would see the credit axed this winter.

The new batteries and packs utilize more-prevalent, less-expensive minerals and are lighter and more cost-effective.

GM says it has developed cells that will make batteries cheaper and more energy dense. The automaker aims to be the first to bring them to market.
