In a meeting at the White House Tuesday, newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney poured cold water on President Trump’s suggestion that the United States could annex Canada, while simultaneously attempting to strike a friendly disposition.

When asked what he hopes the top concession from Canada would be, Trump said “friendship.” The U.S. president didn't seem inclined to scrap his tariffs on Canada nor did he push his ideas of making the North American country the "51st state.
