California Gov. Gavin Newsom said President Donald Trump is “pulling a military dragnet” across Los Angeles during a brief public address on Tuesday.

Anti-ICE protests continue in Los Angeles after the National Guard was deployed following immigration enforcement actions.

The National Guard has at times detained protesters in its deployment to Los Angeles, an official said Wednesday, as demonstrations against Immigration and Customs enforcement raids spread to other major cities.

The Pentagon’s deployment of about 700 Marines to Los Angeles to help the National Guard respond to immigration protests follows weeks of rapid developments in President Donald Trump’s signature domestic priority for mass deportations.

Large crowds gathered near a federal detention center in downtown Los Angeles Friday protesting immigration raids that had taken place throughout the city.

Most of the evening was peaceful, with a few protesters turning to vandalism in a tight area -- actions that brought police to move in closer and ultimately work to disperse the crowd.

HOW WE GOT HERE: The protests erupted after Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on Friday carried out raids in three locations across L.A., where dozens of people were taken into custody. Newsom called the raids “chaotic federal sweeps” that aimed to fill an “arbitrary arrest quota.”
