Drivers for the e-commerce giant's delivery service were recently seen in the large box-type trucks often used by FedEx (FDX 0.86%) and UPS, rather than the vans that it usually deploys.

Interestingly, delivery trucks aren't the only vehicles that use a Flettner rotor. Developed in the 1920s, it was designed by German inventor, Anton Flettner, for use on both ships and planes.

Gatik’s automated driving system is designed for medium duty class 3-6 box trucks up to 26 feet long. It is currently using Ford Transit 350-based trucks with a 12 foot box.

Walmart will use fully autonomous box trucks to make deliveries in Arkansas starting in 2021. The big-box retailer has been working with a startup called Gatik on a delivery pilot for 18 months.
